Jeff Pearlman figures out why listening to music during a race diminishes the experience. I don't bother even when I am on a treadmill, although at my gym there are televisions, which I watch soundlessly. Headphones or earbuds are too much bother. And absolutely if I'm in a race I want to hear the sounds of the race. I'm surprised that someone could work their way up to a marathon and not have figured that out.

It was shorts and singlets weather in Prospect Park Thursday morning, but I hadn't brought any, and so went with tights. The KRAC singlets were well received at a race that has grown quite a bit over the years that I've run it. The race is 30 years old, and is run by the Prospect Park Track Club, rather than the New York Road Runners-- somewhat unusual in New York. It's the only show in town, which is also odd- you would expect to see a race in Central Park, but there isn't one, maybe because it would be complicated by the Macy's Parade. There were 1,200 runners out,(1,162 finishers)a much bigger turnout than I have ever seen, and a bigger turnout than I think they were expecting. I was slow, but EGA was pretty respectable, and both of us finished happy.

For the record, Dave's menu for the KRAC Banquet:

Timbale of Scallop and Sole with Lemon Beurre Blanc and Melted Leeks;
Sweet Potato Soup with Orange Crème Fraiche;
Pan-Roasted Pear Salad with Watercress, Parmesan, and Pecans;
Blueberry Ice;
Slow-Roasted Pork with Bourbon;
Mashed Potatoes with Blue Cheese and Port-Caramelized Onions;
Grilled Vegetables;
Cheese Plate.

Amazing.

Everything you need to know about the Tampa Rays, or the Devil Bays, or whatever they are calling themselves now comes down to this: they picked Don Zimmer to model their new uniforms. If this is how you select male models, what must the process you use to fill out a lineup card look like?

Lost in all the hubbub over Navy beating Notre Dame for the first time in nearly half a century was the other big game in Indiana over the weekend. No, not that one--the game they played in Bloomington. The Hoosiers became Bowl-eligible for the first time since 1994 by beating Ball State. The now go to Chicago to take on mighty Wildcats of Northwestern before concluding their regular season against Purdue over the Old Oaken Bucket.

(I'm thinking I picked a pretty good season to start following college football. It has been wide open, which is cool, and nothing else that I like has been any good. It is a sport full of quirks and traditions, too. I don't think I've ever heard of the Bucket Game, for example, and did you know that Northwestern fans jingle their keys at the start of each kickoff?)
